Hey there, I’m Evolve Benton. I’m a writer, speaker & educator working and living in the Bay Area.
My passion for writing started when I was 13 years old with a crush on my first love in high school. I was born and raised in the inner city of Los Angeles, CA and my passions during my youth included poetry and the game of basketball.
At the age of 13, I wrote a poem about this beautiful woman and shared it at our annual valentine show. I remember my teacher at the time Ms. Saporito explaining to me that his piece was so powerful not only because I of the content but because of the history I was stepping into by being the black queer woman sharing my love story of another black queer woman.
A few years later I got into Dillard University in New Orleans, LA. While attending Dillard I hosted our weekly poetry night "Cafe Noir" and I also started a writing group on campus called the "The Soul of a Poet". This group on poetics were my family and I grew so much as a writer during my time in New Orleans. I had so much to write about also. During my time living there I was displaced after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and my heart was displaced when my mother passed away in 2007, a few months before I graduated from college. I was honored to received the award of poet of the year during my junior and senior year. In 2007 I had my first poem published in the Dillard Review.
In 2012 I graduated with my masters in clinical psychology and started working as healer. I believed and still believe that poetry can be used a vessel to heals one trauma and shift life stories of struggle to stories of triump. Poetry saved my life and continues to be apart of my practice as a healer.
Over the last decade I've had the opportunity to hold space, facilitate workshops and share my poetry with several communities including the following:
- University of Conneticiut
- University of California, Los Angeles
- University of California, Berkeley
- University of California, San Francisco
